After the storms that battered the annuity market last year we enter the New Year hopeful that 2012 will be a better year for those who will be converting their pension pots into income by either purchasing an annuity or investing in pension drawdown.

It was only on July 12th that I wrote "summer is normally a quiet time for annuities and this year is no exception". Barely a month later and my mind has changed.

Summer is normally a quiet time for annuities and this year is no exemption. Since the last annuity update in May there has been little change to annuity rates.
New Fixed Term Annuities from Aviva & Just Retirement

Aviva and Just Retirement launched their Fixed Term Annuities recently thereby adding more choice in this sector of the market. Previously only Met Life (Living Time) and LV= offered Fixed Term.
At last, some good news on pensions - Ian Cowie in Telegraph

Writing in the Telegraph Ian Cowie says there are two bits of good news for pensions. First of all we all living longer and secondly we have more freedom with our pensions following the abolition of the effective compulsion to buy annuities at age 75.

Since our latest annuity update in March 2011 the income from our benchmark* annuity has increased by 1.63%, or in monetary terms nearly £ 100 per annum more. This is obviously good news for those approaching retirement.

Goverment says no to early access to pensions

Last week the Government announced that it is to shelve plans to allow investors to dip into their pension pots before the minimum retirement age. In the US, investors can access their pension pots in special circumstances such as to help pay medical fees.
